Welcome to Slanderous Tongues Theatre

About Our Company...

Slanderous Tongues Theatre: A Classical Works Company is USC's premiere classical works theatre company. Founded in 2009, our goal is to bring the classical works of Shakespeare, Sophocles, Aristophanes, Molière, and other figures from across the spectrum of the classical world into the lives and hearts of the USC community. By investigating the works of these masters of early drama (and the works they have inspired), we hope to create an awareness of the birth of modern drama as well as major evolutions the dramatic form has taken.

Slanderous Tongues Theatre is about the actor's relationship to the text. Most often when these works are performed, they are examined only on their surface value. Shallow, uninspired staging with unimaginative interpretations. Slanderous Tongues' productions aim to dig deeper and explore some of the subtext behind some of theatre's most influential works. In this way, we hope to produce engaging and thought provoking pieces that give the audience more than an entertaining evening of theatre (while still being wildly entertaining). Instead of producing works for the sake of production, we aim to educate our actors and give a comprehensive understanding of the work to both the actor and the audience in hopes that classical theatre can find a new, invigorated audience at USC that is excited about what we do.

Slanderous Tongues Theatre is a completely student-run undergraduate organization aimed at engaging both theatre and non-theatre majors in a collaborative exploration of the foundations of modern drama.
